Kolkata Metro's 1.6 km extension to Eden Gardens awaiting Railway Board approval

Kolkata Metro is planning to extend its Joka-Esplanade Purple Line by an additional 1.6 kilometers to connect directly to Eden Gardens, a major sports and cultural hub in the city. This extension aims to enhance connectivity for commuters traveling to and from high-traffic areas such as Strand Road, Babughat, and the Kolkata High Court vicinity.

The proposed extension includes the construction of a new underground station near Eden Gardens, situated opposite the Mohun Bagan Football Ground. This station will be integrated into the existing Purple Line, which currently spans 14.4 kilometers from Joka to Esplanade, featuring a mix of underground and elevated stations. The new station will serve as a critical node, facilitating direct metro access to the stadium and surrounding areas.

To accommodate the extension, modifications to the existing metro line are necessary. The crossover point, where train compartments switch tracks, will be relocated towards Strand Road. This adjustment is essential to ensure smooth operations and to facilitate the construction of the new underground station without disrupting the current services.

Environmental considerations are a significant aspect of the planning process. The proposed changes may involve the preservation or removal of trees along the route. Authorities are conducting thorough assessments to minimize environmental impact and ensure sustainable development.

The extension project is currently under review by the Railway Board.
